Overcoming Panic

My Journey to Better Mental Health

In 2010, amidst the joyful chaos of family life, I found myself grappling with the terrifying experience of a panic attack. It was a Sunday afternoon, and on our way home from a family swim, I confided in my partner about the palpitations I’d been experiencing. Little did I know, this moment would mark the beginning of a transformative journey towards better mental health.

As we drove home, the palpitations intensified, accompanied by a cascade of sensations along with dizziness then numbness spreading down through my body. I had an overwhelming sense of dread and fear. By the time we arrived home I was gripped by a terror that something catastrophic was happening to me. I couldn’t even lift a phone to call for help.

Thankfully, my partner dialed the emergency services, and as I sat there, consumed by fear, I couldn’t help but notice how peaceful my 11 month old son looked as he slept soundly on the sofa. In that moment, the thought of my condition affecting him for the rest of his life fueled my anxiety further. The arrival of the ambulance brought a mixture of relief and apprehension—relief that help was on its way, but apprehension about what lay ahead.

In the ambulance and later at the hospital, I underwent a battery of tests, each one amplifying my fears. What if I was having a stroke? What if there was something seriously wrong with my heart? The doctor’s diagnosis came as a profound relief—my irregular heartbeat was nothing more than a benign condition exacerbated by stress.

But it was the doctor’s words about stress that resonated deeply with me. He spoke of the countless individuals, like myself, whose physical health bore the brunt of their mental strain. It was a wake-up call—a realisation that I needed to prioritise my well-being and find healthier ways to navigate life’s challenges.

From that day forward, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and personal development. I delved into practices that nourished my mind, body, and soul—mindfulness, meditation, and eventually training in NLP then Hypnosis. These tools not only helped me manage stress and help me gain a new perspective on life, they’ve also empowered me to help others on their own paths to mental wellness.

Today, as a Solution Focused Coach & Hypnotherapist, I am deeply grateful for the journey that brought me here. Every client I work with, every life I touch, is a testament to the transformative power of resilience and self-discovery. My experience taught me that even in the darkest moments, there is hope—and that with the right support and mindset, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
